Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines is a public R1 research university in Golden, Colorado, with approximately 6,200 undergraduate students. The university is focused almost entirely on engineering, applied science, computing and related fields, creating a student body where technical interests are central to the campus culture. Mines emphasizes hands-on learning, research and connections with industry.
Mines offers majors ranging from traditional engineering fields such as mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer science to more specialized programs in mining, petroleum, geological and geophysical engineering and metallurgical and materials engineering. The university recently launched the nation's first bachelor's degree in Quantum Systems Engineering, an interdisciplinary program combining physics, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, engineering design and mathematics.
Students do not need to declare a major immediately. The first three semesters include essentially the same foundational coursework for all students, making it relatively easy to explore different engineering disciplines before committing to a specific field. Academic major fairs and major-specific advising also help students figure out what suits them best. The curriculum is demanding from the beginning: Mines expects students to be calculus-ready and requires either chemistry or physics in preparation for admission, with both recommended.
Hands-on learning is a defining part of the Mines experience. Students begin working on real-world problems during their first year through design projects, laboratories, field sessions, research and other experiential opportunities. Mines even owns and operates the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, where students can learn in an actual underground mine. Students can participate in undergraduate research, entrepreneurship and innovation programs and projects with industry partners. The university's R1 designation reflects its significant research activity.
Career preparation is woven throughout the Mines experience. More than 1,250 organizations recruit Mines students each year, including companies such as NASA, Lockheed Martin, Chevron and Google. The fall career fair brings approximately 450 companies to campus and students have access to career services for up to two years after graduation. Aerospace is the largest industry employing Mines graduates, while the university's broader connections extend across energy, technology, critical minerals, engineering and other technical fields. Entrepreneurship and innovation programs allow students to develop ideas and participate in pitching competitions. There are combined undergraduate/graduate degree options and a first-semester-in-France opportunity, which students can apply for after they’ve been admitted. Honors programs provide additional academic opportunities.
The student community has a strong identity built around Mines traditions. Students are called Orediggers, and the school has a live burro mascot. The "Carry the Rock" tradition is one of the university's most recognizable, and students receive a silver-plated metal diploma. E-Days, the annual engineering celebration, includes the cardboard-and-duct-tape boat race and a student-designed fireworks show—one of the largest in Colorado.
Golden, Colorado provides easy access to hiking and other outdoor activities, the Rocky Mountains and Red Rocks. Students receive free access to RTD public transportation, including transportation into Denver and to the airport. First- and second-year students are required to live on campus, and juniors and seniors are guaranteed housing if they want to stay on campus. Students can choose from single, double and triple rooms, and older students have the option of living in on-campus apartments.
About half of the undergraduate population is from Colorado, more than one-in-four identifies as non-white and approximately 32% of students are women. Orediggers have opportunities to participate in NCAA Division II athletics, Greek life (17%) and a wide range of organizations. The university also has a large Society of Women Engineers presence, multicultural engineering groups and other organizations designed to build community within the STEM environment.
Who would thrive at Colorado School of Mines?
Mines is a strong fit for a student who already knows that engineering, science, computing or another technical field is likely to be central to their academic experience. Students who enjoy solving concrete problems, working with their hands and applying what they learn will find that the curriculum emphasizes experience from the beginning. It can be particularly appealing to students who want a highly collaborative engineering environment, strong connections to industry and a clear focus on career preparation. Mines is also a good fit for students who want Colorado's outdoor lifestyle without giving up access to a highly technical academic environment.
