University of Denver
The University of Denver (DU) is a private research university in Denver, Colorado, with approximately 5,700 undergraduate students and 7,200 graduate students. Its location gives students access to both an urban environment and the outdoors, with downtown Denver less than 15 minutes from campus and the Rocky Mountains nearby. DU also operates the 720-acre James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus, about two hours from the main campus, where students participate in academic, leadership, outdoor and personal-development experiences.
DU offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and programs, but students are not admitted by major except for programs such as music that require an audition. In fact, exploratory studies (undeclared) is one of the most popular choices for incoming students, making DU a particularly flexible option for students who aren't sure what they want to study. Business, hospitality and engineering are among the university's popular areas of study. Students commonly combine majors and minors, and some are able to graduate in three years. The quarter system consists of three 10-week quarters, with students generally taking four classes at a time. Classes are small, with an average of about 24 students, and 94% have fewer than 50 students; 99% of undergraduate courses are taught by faculty rather than teaching assistants.
The university's signature 4D Experience is designed to make education about more than just academics. Its four dimensions are Deepen Intellect, Develop Well-being, Discover Character, and Design Careers & Lives of Purpose. Students are encouraged to connect what they learn in the classroom with internships, research, study abroad, leadership, personal growth and questions about what kind of life they want to build. Every first-year student takes a small First-Year Seminar class, and the faculty member teaching that seminar becomes the student's advisor. Career advising also begins during the first year and continues throughout all four years.
Experiential learning is a major part of the DU experience. 78% of students complete an internship, while DU is also an R1 research institution with extensive opportunities for undergraduate research. Study abroad is particularly integrated into the curriculum: about 66% of undergraduates currently participate, with more than 100 partner programs in 55 countries. Most students study abroad during the fall of their junior year, and eligible students can receive financial support for significant study-abroad expenses through the Cherrington Global Scholars benefits. Certain programs, including hospitality and international studies, incorporate international experience directly into their curricula.
DU has a number of programs designed to provide additional academic and personal support. The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP), which has existed since the 1970s, provides intensive academic support for students with learning differences. Students apply after being admitted to DU, and the program is separate from the university's standard disability accommodations. First-generation students also have dedicated resources and programs, and the university offers support specifically serving students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. The library houses tutoring, research and writing resources, and there are additional opportunities for students interested in leadership, including a minor called the Pioneer Leadership Program.
Most undergraduates live on campus for at least their first two years. First-year students generally live in doubles, while sophomores have suite-style options; older students frequently live in nearby apartments or houses within walking distance of campus. About 20% of students participate in Greek life, and DU has 18 NCAA Division I sports, with Men’s ice hockey being the most successful. The campus itself is compact and walkable, and Denver's light rail is included in student fees, making it easy for students to travel around the city.
Who would thrive at the University of Denver?
DU is a strong fit for a student who wants a medium-sized research university where academics are important but are supported by other experiences. Students who are intellectually curious, open to exploring different subjects and interested in combining academics with internships, research, study abroad, outdoor experiences or leadership will find many ways to build their own path. It can be particularly appealing to a student who wants access to a city but also values the outdoors, and a student who wants a university where career exploration begins early. The quarter system can work especially well for students who like variety and momentum and are comfortable keeping up with a faster academic pace.
