University of Maryland
The University of Maryland, College Park is Maryland’s flagship public university, located just outside Washington, D.C. Founded in 1856, UMD combines traditional brick architecture and classic white-columned academic buildings with the energy of a large, spirited Big Ten campus. Best known for programs in computer science, engineering, business, journalism, government and the sciences, Maryland also offers more than 100 majors across 13 schools and colleges. Popular majors include computer science, biological sciences, psychology, engineering, criminology, business, government and politics, journalism and neuroscience.
The university received approximately 67,000 applications for a freshman class of about 5,500 students, making admissions increasingly competitive. Maryland remains test optional, but admitted students typically present mostly A’s in highly rigorous coursework, with an average weighted GPA around 4.5. Applying by the November 1 Early Action deadline is extremely important, as students applying EA are automatically considered for merit scholarships, the Honors College, Scholars programs, living-learning communities, and research opportunities including FIRE and BioFIRE. More than 90% of admitted students are accepted through Early Action, making Regular Decision significantly more competitive.
During our visit, campus felt lively, social and full of school spirit. Students were everywhere—studying outside, heading to internships, attending events and gathering in groups between classes. Despite the university’s size, many programs intentionally create smaller academic communities and support systems within the larger campus environment.
UMD’s location is one of its greatest strengths. The university sits just outside Washington, D.C., creating direct access to internships, research and careers in government, technology, policy, journalism and public service. Students frequently intern during the academic year at federal agencies, nonprofits, media outlets and private companies throughout the region. The upcoming Purple Line, expected to open in 2027, will connect campus more directly to Bethesda and eastern D.C., further expanding access to opportunities off campus.
Research opportunities are extensive, particularly within the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS). The college includes programs in atmospheric and oceanic science, astronomy, mathematics, statistics, biological sciences, physics and computer science, which is currently the largest major on campus. Astronomy students benefit from access to an on-campus observatory and dedicated faculty separate from the physics department. NASA facilities are located only minutes from campus, creating strong opportunities for internships and faculty-led research collaborations. Strong research opportunities also exist in Engineering (AI, robotics, materials science), Public policy (very strong due to D.C. proximity), Journalism and media studies, Business analytics and information systems and Behavioral and social sciences.
The engineering school emphasizes the benefits of a large research university while intentionally creating smaller support networks for students. Engineering students have access to specialized career services, internship and co-op advising, leadership programs, study abroad opportunities and support services focused on study skills and time management. Women in Engineering programs and scholarships for both incoming and continuing students are also available.
Families should pay close attention to Maryland’s Limited Enrollment Programs (LEPs). Majors including computer science, engineering, biology, biochemistry, business, neuroscience, psychology, chemistry, criminology and immersive media design are more selective than general university admission. Students can be admitted to UMD without being admitted directly into one of these majors. Some students may later apply internally after completing gateway coursework, though internal transfer admission into computer science remains especially competitive.
UMD also offers strong support systems for students navigating a large university environment. Academic advising begins early, and students can access tutoring, mentoring, career advising and research opportunities throughout their undergraduate years. Undecided students begin in the School of Letters and Sciences while exploring possible majors and pathways.
Students are drawn to Maryland for many reasons: Division I athletics, strong academics, internship access, research opportunities and vibrant student life. Clubs and organizations span everything from cultural groups and political organizations to engineering teams, media outlets, esports and performing arts. The university’s proximity to D.C. also creates opportunities that are difficult to replicate at more isolated campuses.
Who would thrive at UMD?
Maryland is an excellent fit for students seeking the resources and opportunities of a large public research university. Students who thrive here tend to be independent, motivated and excited by a fast-paced environment with abundant academic and extracurricular options. Many students are career-focused and eager to take advantage of internships, research and networking opportunities while still in college. Students interested in STEM, public policy, government, journalism or business particularly benefit from Maryland’s location and connections.
