University of Minnesota Twin Cities
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities offers the opportunities of a major research university with access to the cultural and professional resources of Minneapolis and St. Paul. With more than 300 majors and an R1 research designation, the University is a strong option for students who want academic flexibility, hands-on experience and the energy of a large campus. Research is a significant part of the undergraduate experience, with opportunities including the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), which provides eligible students with a stipend for research projects. Nearly half of undergraduates participate in research, giving them the chance to work alongside faculty before graduation.
Academic options are extensive, from engineering, biological sciences and business to psychology, design and the liberal arts. The College of Liberal Arts is the University's largest college, with more than 70 majors. Specialized programs include sport management, atmospheric sciences, mortuary science, architecture and UX Design. Engineering students can pursue co-ops, and aspiring teachers can complete the 4+1 DirecTrack to Teaching program. Students interested in health professions should be aware that admission to many professional programs takes place after enrollment. Nursing is particularly competitive: the direct-admit program accepts a limited number of first-year students and requires an Early Action application by the November 1 deadline. Students who are still exploring their options will work with CAPE, the Center for Academic Planning and Exploration, while career centers within individual colleges offer more targeted guidance.
Despite its size, the University provides support through college-based academic advisors, peer tutoring and faculty office hours. Eighty percent of classes have fewer than 60 students, and courses with more than 100 students include a smaller lab or discussion section for additional review. Students can pursue honors programs as incoming students or apply later. The Disability Resource Center and First-Generation Student Success Center offer additional support. Study abroad is another major part of student life, with a wide range of programs all over the world and Gopher Gateway, which allows students to begin their college experience in one of three European locations.
The Twin Cities location is a major advantage. Students can explore internships, professional opportunities and cultural attractions throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul while enjoying the traditions of a large university. The school spans the East Bank, West Bank and St. Paul campuses, with light rail and bus transportation available to students at no cost. Housing is guaranteed for first-year students who want it, although it is not required, and students can choose traditional residence halls or apartment-style accommodations. With Division I athletics, club teams, intramural sports and more than 1,000 student organizations, there are plenty of ways to build community beyond the classroom.
Cost and application policies are also worth noting. Tuition is charged at a flat rate, so students can take additional credits without paying more for the extra credits, making accelerated study a possibility. Transfer students can use Transferology to explore how their credits will correlate to University of Minnesota programs. Applicants are automatically considered for scholarships, and the University will be test-optional at least through 2029. The application is available through Common App and does not require an essay or letters of recommendation, although applicants must self-report their grades. Students should review the high school course requirements for their intended college, particularly those applying to biological sciences or the College of Science and Engineering.
Who would thrive at the University of Minnesota?
Students who want a wide range of academic choices, access to research and career opportunities and the independence of a large university will find plenty to explore here.
